The Pitch Lake in La Brea, Trinidad is the largest deposit of asphalt in the world. An examination of the period 1960 to 1997 reveals that there was a consistent decline in the production of asphalt. In 1960 the amount of asphalt extracted was 154.212 metric tonnes.
This figure was at its highest in 1964 with a value of 193.304. By 1997 this figure fell considerably to 13.327 metric tonnes. This meant that during the period under review, Asphalt production fell by 179.976 tonnes from its highest to its lowest point a decline of 93.1%.
